Most organisations can cut their cloud bill with a focused clean-up. Many see the savings disappear within months. The difference is whether cost management became a habit.
Why clean-ups fade
New workloads launch, teams change, resources are forgotten and prices and services evolve. Without an owner and a rhythm, waste returns. A project ends, but the causes of overspending do not.
Three phases, repeated
The FinOps Framework describes a continuous cycle of three phases.
Inform. Make costs visible and attributable. That means a sensible account structure, consistent tagging and reports that show spending by team, product or customer. People change behaviour when they can see what they spend.
Optimise. Act on what the data shows: remove idle resources, rightsize, use Savings Plans or reserved capacity where usage is steady, and choose managed or serverless designs where they cost less to run.
Operate. Make it routine. Set budgets, alert on anomalies, review regularly and assign owners, with engineering and finance looking at the same numbers.
Protect what matters
Cost is one pillar of the AWS Well-Architected Framework, alongside reliability, performance and security. Cutting without understanding a workload can damage the others. Good optimisation states the trade-off and decides it on purpose.
How we approach it
We baseline spending, rank opportunities by effort and risk, implement safely and put governance in place. Through Managed Services we can keep reviewing as part of operations.
