Disaster recovery on AWS for a public-sector organisation

From daily backups and recovery measured in days to continuous replication and a recovery site that is active in under an hour.

The situation

A public-sector organisation relied on daily backups, with copies transferred off-site. Its systems are interconnected with European programmes, so it needed a disaster recovery solution that could guarantee recovery within a few hours, not days.

The challenge

  • Backups guaranteed a recovery point of one day, so up to a day of data was at risk.
  • Recovery time was uncertain and could take days, or longer, depending on the incident.
  • Interconnected systems called for a recovery time of a few hours.

What we did

  1. Review the existing systems

We reviewed the current infrastructure and the recovery requirements.

  2. Design the architecture and landing zone

We designed and implemented the AWS architecture and landing zone that would host the recovery site.

  3. Replicate continuously

The IT infrastructure was replicated to the AWS recovery site with continuous replication, minimising data loss.

  4. Make testing easy

Recovery tests can be run independently, without interrupting the existing infrastructure.

The outcome

  • Continuous replication, so data is protected up to the last moments before an incident.
  • The recovery site is active in under an hour after a catastrophic event, for the complete server fleet.
  • The whole application stack is recovered, not only servers and data.
  • Operators can choose between several point-in-time snapshots when restoring.
  • A cost-effective and reliable disaster recovery solution managing several servers.

AWS services used

  • CloudEndure Disaster Recovery (since succeeded by AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery)
  • AWS landing zone
