Resilient hosting for a financial and accounting firm's core application

Moving a Windows Server application from a local hosting provider to a secure, multi-AZ AWS architecture built for month-end and year-end peaks.

The situation

A firm providing financial management and accounting services to businesses across Greece, from large enterprises to freelancers, hosted its main application with a local cloud provider and suffered performance problems and frequent availability issues. Regulatory deadlines and heavy demand at month-end and year-end make availability critical. The firm relies mainly on third-party software for accounting and payroll.

The challenge

  • Frequent failures and low availability on the existing hosting.
  • Regulatory deadlines, with demand peaking at month-end and year-end.
  • Security, resilience and availability as top priorities.

What we did

  1. Review requirements

    We reviewed the existing systems and processes together with business and regulatory requirements.

  2. Migrate

    AWS Application Migration Service carried out the initial migration.

  3. Decouple and secure the data tier

    The application was decoupled and the database tier moved to separate internal servers for maximum security.

  4. Build for availability

    The architecture uses multi-AZ EC2 instances with autoscaling and an Application Load Balancer.

  5. Secure and monitor

    Following the AWS Security pillar: encryption in transit and at rest, VPN access from the firm's offices, least-privilege access, protected secrets, and monitoring with automated alerting and remediation.

The outcome

  • Reduced operational overhead, with significant cost savings.
  • An infrastructure with high resilience, scalability and security.
  • Monitoring, incident detection, alerting, response and remediation are automated.
